Japan, how I love thee...

I just got back from my trip to Japan and all I can say is WOW. What an amazing place!

I took lots of pictures of food, but unfortunately 95% of the time I had no idea what I was eating. The places had pictures of food on the menus, but most descriptions were in Japanese. It was more of a guessing game, but a very delicious one.

However, there is one dish that I can talk about with ease. Sushi.

I LOVE sushi. I could eat it all the time. Unfortunately I feel that Japan has now spoiled me. I was warned that once I had sushi in Japan, it would never taste the same anywhere else.

The warnings were right. The sushi in Japan melts in your mouth. Seriously.
The picture above was taken at a sushi bar just outside the Tsukiji fish market. The two to the left are tuna, the middle is albacore, and the far right is minced tuna.

To say that the fish is so soft that you don't have to chew would be an understatement. I love tuna but albacore has always been my favorite. At the restaurant that morning, I announced to my husband that I can never eat albacore again (unless I am in Japan). The pieces of albacore I ate - and yes, I ordered much more than was pictured above - were absolute perfection. Sigh...

I guess I'll just have to go to Japan again! :)

One thing I found interesting was that there wasn't the large decorative rolls that I see in the US. Not sure why - perhaps Alisha can provide some insight? The hubby's thought was that since the fish is so amazing in Japan, you want to enjoy just the fish.

More fun pictures to come!

Ahh...that sushi looks so amazing! I never made it to the fish market unfortunately, but it sounds like the perfect thing for 5am on a Sunday morning.

I think the big fancy rolls have been a bit Americanized (since we like big fancy things in general), but I think there's a time and a place for them as well.

I could go for some sushi soon, and fortunately Auckland has loads so maybe I just will.

Welcome back. :)

Alisha, you have to go back to the fish market! It was a fascinating experience!

That makes sense about the rolls. I always preferred rolls and was a bit disappointed when I got over there, but once I tasted the sashimi, I didn't miss the rolls at all. Now I miss the sashimi...

Yum! I still haven't had sushi yet since I've been back but I'm looking forward to it soon.

I like your theory about the big decorative rolls. And lol, because I've never thought about them that way.

I'm so jealous. Dying to go to Japan and eat real sushi. I worked in a sushi bar for 5 years on and off. I <3 sushi.

Melanie - I'm going to laugh now every time I think of big decorative rolls.

Sara - I really hope you get to go to Japan! I love sushi but our favorite place here closed down a few months ago, so now I'm in sushi withdrawal.
